ABG puts in building application for new construction of the “Deutschlandhaus” in Hamburg

  • Hadi Teherani reveals final architectural design
  • Green heaven in its spacious atrium invites to stay

Hamburg, 7 September 2018.
The new building of the “Deutschlandhaus” on Gänsemarkt in Hamburg’s City Centre will replace the existing one, built at the end of the 1920’s and designed by architects Fritz Block and Ernst Hochfelde. ABG Group, the owner of the property, is now preparing the building application. Hadi Teherani architects applied the last finishing touch to the building’s design planning, in close cooperation with the owner as well as Chief Construction Director Franz-Josef Höing, the District Office Hamburg Mitte and the Antiquities and Monuments Office. Besides the façade with its modern style of traditional “Kontor houses”, the design seeks to impress with an open to the public Atrium including a palm forest.

The design-based elaboration of the plans applies to the outside skin of the new “Deutschlandhaus” in particular. The façade, designed by Hamburg based Hadi Teherani Architects, is characterised by recognising the historic architecture as well as showing a great extent of individuality. Especially the window elements were reworked and a decision in favour for dark frames was made. Furthermore, the size, structure and colour of the brick façade’s stones were reworked. The stones will be laid in unusually long and flat dimensions and are specifically manufactured for this building.

Chief Construction Director appreciates final design plans
The impulse for deepening the individuality of the newly constructed building was given by Chief Construction Director Höing: “The design for the ‘Deutschlandhaus’ will give rise to a very unique contemporary building that will fill this prominent spot in Hamburg’s city geometry very self-confident.”

Hadi Teherani, managing partner of the architect’s office that won the workshop process back in October 2017: “The new ‘Deutschlandhaus’ resembles the elegance of the 1920’s ‘Bauhaus-Style’ architecture, yet in a self-confident and distinctive way it develops its own characteristics reflecting modernity.”

The newly constructed building whose gross floor area amounts to 40,000 m² will offer space for offices, retailers and gastronomy as well as 30 apartments on Valentinskamp.

“The final design plan completely satisfies us. It is the result of a successful process of coordination of planning with all parties involved. The next step will be to put in the building application,” says ABG’s managing director Guido Wiese.

Water basin and palm trees refresh the building’s centre
The Atrium is open to the public and resembles a Mediterranean atmosphere. Approximately 1,000 m² in size, the building’s centre will invite visitors to stay with lush planting like 20-m high palm trees, surrounding water basins as well as gastronomical offers. This exceptional quality of stay is housed under a translucent, 35-m high roof. “The concept of designing the heart of the new ‘Deutschlandhaus’ sets a calculated contrast to its surroundings,” explains Teherani.

In particular, after World War 2 and again at the end of the 1970’s, the construction of the historic “Deutschlandhaus” had been changed and modernised significantly. Therefore, the Antiquities and Monuments Office of Hamburg did not award the building the status of a monument. A thorough review of the construction in 2015 concluded that today’s requirements of working places as well as sustainability standards cannot be met with a renovation of the existing building.

The construction of the new building is planned to start in the first half of 2019.
